Alzheimer's Strong - Our Story

Alzheimer's Strong - Our Story

Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, affects more than 50 million households worldwide and is thought to be the third leading cause of mortality in the elderly.

Alzheimer’s Strong is a movement inspired by my step-dad - Bruce Wood. Bruce Wood was a hardworking man who achieved alot in life, advancing to the position of CEO of not one, but three, significant corporations. He demonstrated that if you work hard in life, you can achieve your dreams. Bruce had hoped to achieve even greater success, but his path was cut short when he was diagnosed with Young-Onset Alzheimer's disease in 2016.

Despite being forced to leave the workforce due to his diagnosis, Bruce did not allow this sickness get the better of him.  Even when facing much more difficulties in his regular routine, Bruce remained strong.

Bruce used to tell me when I was younger that I was "strong as a bull." When I think about the remark, I realize that Bruce is the one that is as tough as a bull.

Anyone who has been affected by Alzheimer's, whether personally or via the diagnosis of a family member or friend, understands how difficult this illness is. With Alzheimer's, I've seen it all: joyful moments, sad times, forgetfulness and aggression. Bruce is doing well now, despite having gone through so much. In his long-term care home, he spends his time smiling, dancing and mingling with others.

Despite the fact that it affects so many people, there is no cure or even treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease. Alzheimer's Strong was formed to raise awareness and raise funds for Alzheimer's-related charities. The Alzheimer's Strong notion can be applied in a variety of life situations. Instead of dwelling in your sadness for too long, be strong. "As tough as a bull," just like Bruce.
